Dosage

The dosage of Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) can vary depending on factors such as the severity of the condition being treated, the patient’s age, medical history, and other medications they may be taking. However, typical dosages for adults are as follows:

For muscle spasms:

•  The usual starting dose is 5 mg three times a day. This can be increased to 10 mg three times a day if needed.
• The maximum recommended dose is 30 mg per day.

Warnings and precautions

Here are some important warnings and precautions to consider when using Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine):

1. Sedation and Drowsiness: Flexeril cause drowsiness and impairment of cognitive and motor skills. Patients should avoid activities requiring mental alertness or coordination, such as driving or operating heavy machinery until they know how Flexeril affects them.
2. Alcohol and CNS Depressants: Combining it with alcohol or other central nervous system (CNS) depressants, such as benzodiazepines or opioids, may increase the risk of central nervous system depression, including severe sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death.
3. Serotonin Syndrome: these pills increase the risk of serotonin syndrome when used concomitantly with serotonergic drugs, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, or certain opioids. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
4. Cardiovascular Effects: Flexeril has adverse effects on the cardiovascular system, including tachycardia, palpitations, and possible arrhythmias, especially in patients with pre-existing cardiac conditions or those taking medications that affect cardiac conduction.
5. Hepatic Impairment: It should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairment, as it is extensively metabolized by the liver. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for these patients.
6. Urinary Retention: Flexeril may exacerbate urinary retention in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) or other conditions affecting urinary function. Caution should be exercised in these patients.
7. Glaucoma: Flexeril may exacerbate the symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma. It should be used with caution in patients with glaucoma, and regular eye examinations are recommended.
8. Pregnancy and Lactation: The safety of Flexeril in pregnant or breastfeeding women has not been established. It should be used during pregnancy or lactation only if the potential benefits justify the potential risks to the fetus or infant.
9. Pediatric Use: Flexeril is not recommended for use in pediatric patients under the age of 15 years due to insufficient safety and efficacy data.
10. Elderly Patients: Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of Flexeril, including sedation, dizziness, and anticholinergic effects. Lower starting doses and close monitoring are recommended in this population.
