Dosage

The dosage of Riam suspension varies according to the disease. There are some typical dosages for it.

• Amebiasis:
• Treatment of Intestinal Amebiasis: 500 mg orally three times a day for 5 to 10 days.
• Amebic Liver Abscess: 500 mg orally three times a day for 5 to 10 days.
• Trichomoniasis:
• 2 g orally in a single dose or 250 mg orally three times a day for 7 days.
• Bacterial Vaginosis:
• 750 mg orally twice daily for 7 days.

Riam syrup Side effects

Some documented side effects of Riam syrup are classified as major and minor but serious side effects which are mentioned below:

Drug interactions

Riam suspension (200 mg/90 mL) interacts severely with warfarin, potentially increasing bleeding risk, and moderately with ethinyl estradiol, atorvastatin, disulfiram, phenytoin, and lithium, requiring cautious monitoring and possible dosage adjustments.

Warnings

Here are the recommendations for when not to use Riam suspension and associated warnings:

• • Allergy: Avoid use in patients with known allergy to Riam suspension (200 mg/90 mL) or other nitroimidazoles.
  • Pregnancy: Avoid use in the first trimester for bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. Consider use in the second and third trimesters only if necessary.
  • Breastfeeding: Use with caution; monitor for candidal infections and diarrhoea. Avoid breastfeeding for 24 hours after single-dose maternal treatment.
  • Blood cell count: Close monitoring of WBC count and platelets is necessary due to the potential for leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and bone marrow aplasia.
  • Neurologic Toxicity: Watch for symptoms like convulsions and peripheral neuropathy; report any neurological problems promptly.
  • Impaired liver function: Monitor liver enzymes before and during treatment; discontinue if elevated.
  • Dialysis: Adjust the dosing schedule accordingly; the desired effect may not be achieved in dialysis patients.
  • Chronic therapy: Avoid unnecessary use to prevent resistance and additional infections.
  • Driving or Operating machinery: Caution is advised due to the potential for blurred vision or dizziness; refrain from driving or operating machinery if experiencing these symptoms.
